
Mona Mengnan Chu is a filmmaker and producer based in New York, working across fiction and non-fiction, with a focus on internationally oriented, author-driven projects.
Chu’s producing credits include A Bright Sunny Day (the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the 25th Shanghai IFF) and Mundane Summer (the 29th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival). She also associate-produced, and co-script translated Rosemead (the 20th Tribeca, the 78th Locarno Film Festival Prix du Public UBS, the 62nd Golden Horse Awards Best Adapted Script Nomination). Chu maintains an ongoing collaboration with director Yupeng He, developing multiple projects recognized at international festivals, including a project that won the Special Prize of the International Jury at the 74th Berlinale.
Prior to her work in independent cinema, Chu held senior creative roles at Hunan TV, where she led the development and production of large-scale unscripted formats and live broadcasts. She directed over 90 episodes and oversaw projects that engaged with contemporary social and gender dynamics. Her series Wo Jia Na Gui Nv, widely regarded as one of the first major Chinese shows centered on the lives of unmarried women from China’s one-child policy generation, received a Magnolia Award nomination at the 25th Shanghai International TV Festival.
Chu holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and is an alumna of the La Fémis Producing Atelier. She has taught nonfiction filmmaking at Columbia, where her students have received honors including the Student Academy Awards.
